Pachaiammal worked in the housekeeping department as a cleaning person in a hospital. But because she did not keep good health she had to discontinue work.
Her husband Mr. Muruganandam works as an electrician and plumber in the maintenance department of a College in Chennai.
On this fateful day Muruganandam and his wife Pachaiammal were returning on 20th May from a wedding in Kalahasti on a TVS 50. They went by bike because the wedding was in interior of Kalahasti and the wife found it difficult to walk. While Muruganandam tried to avoid an oncoming lorry, he did not realize he was approaching a speed breaker. Both of them fell off the two wheeler. Before they realized the lorry had run over Pachaiammal’s legs. One leg was crushed badly.
First aid was given at the local hospital at Kalahasti. From there they were taken to Kilpauk Medical College and then shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Hospital. But everywhere they faced delays with doctors as the condition needed immediate attention.

However, the first aid given did not withstand these movements and changes and one leg have to be amputated immediately.
Doctors are trying very hard to save the second leg. She is responding to treatment which means a prolonged stay is needed in the hospital, including skin grafting procedures. Being a diabetic her healing is slow. They have two young daughters, Mercy and Mary, and the girls are distraught and in agony at their mother’s condition.
Diagnosis - Crush Degloving Injury to Right Lower Limb with mangled Extremity for which patient underwent Above Knew Amputation Right lower limb and
Crush Degloving Injury with Circumferential skin loss, mid thigh level to Distal Third leg – left lower limb for which she underwent knee spanning external Fixator left side.
She is advised to undergo soft tissue cover.
